This didn’t start out as a tribute to John Gierach. But as I worked through the video, I realized it was quietly becoming just that. So many of the moments I captured are things John has written about with such honesty and depth over the years. His influence on me as an outdoorsman is immense, and though I never met him, he’s been a mentor in our own way. Upland bird hunting with friends and their dogs, cooking wild game, tying flies from feathers and fur gathered in the field, casting those flies for wild trout with bamboo rods... these aren’t just activities. They’re experiences shaped by John’s words, his deep connection to these traditions. Maybe I’d still be doing them without his books, maybe not. But as I edited this footage, it became clear how much these moments were inspired by John’s writing. So, here it is – a genuine thank you to John Gierach, an homage that grew organically out of time spent with his books and a shared love for the outdoors. What started as a few days break from windshield time driving up and down the Lake Erie tribs of Steelhead Alley to shoot a few hours of video turned into something I hadn’t expected. Thanks, John.
