Asagi Koi fish variety – Development and selection [KOI GUIDE]

Asagi is a very, very nice variety! Today we are discussing with you what characteristics the Asagi Koi fish has, and what you should look for when you do want to select Asagi Koi. A very famous breeder for Asagi is the Kataoka Koi Farm, or also called the Oya Koi Farm. It is one of the breeders that is every year again is dragging prices in with their really sharp lines on their Asagi. Unfortunately I’m at this moment not able to show you Asagi close-up from this Koi farm. But I do have some alternatives from the Maruhiro Koi Farm. These Asagi are also quite nice, still a bit small with their size around 20 cm. I’m just using these Koi to explain you in a bit more details towards which aspects you have to look when you want to look out for a nice Asagi. I know that these Koi are not perfect, that doesn’t matter for this video. Actually it can even be used in a positive way, because it helps me to explain you why sometimes you don’t want to select an Asagi. Something that makes the Asagi a beautiful variety is because of their blue coloured, dark blue coloured, scales. The middle can be dark blue, and the sides of the scales can be light blue. This is really in my opinion something that will make or break an Asagi. What is very important for Asagi, is that there is symmetry visible in the colours. Sumi and blueish dark color on Asagi: Sumi will develop at a later age. If sumi will develop too early, there is a larger chance that the Asagi will actually become too dark. So if you want to select a light Asagi, you want the Asagi to be as light as possible. Orange on Asagi: When an Asagi is young, you want that to make sure that actually not a lot of orange is visible. Because the more orange is visible at both sides, the higher the chance is that more and more orange will keep developing. And actually you don’t want orange to be visible above the lateral line. On the head, you actually don’t want orange to be visible there. It should only have orange on the cheeks and gills, for the body below the lateral line. And in the pectoral fins. Regarding the pectoral fins, you can take into account that orange will develop over the first couple of years. So even if only a little bit of orange is visible when the Asagi is young, almost always more orange will be visible a few years later on the fins. So don’t worry too much about this part when Asagi are young. Good Asagi have a light grey coloured head. Preferable a little bit light blue looking. There shouldn’t be any darker black spots visible, or indications that black can develop and will become more intensive. Instead you want it to be as light as possible. So you want the head to be as clean as possible. Consider to subscribe if you enjoyed this video. And stay up to date of new video’s coming up!
