The Best Of SEGA 8-Bit Swing And Jazz (Audio CD)

Welcome to an audio Sega casino, pinball party! Where we celebrate that PSG periodic pulse sawtooth wave and you can be the guest of honour listening to such a great collection of swing and jazz music in 8-bit form. I've never made an audio album quite like this before but appears the Nintendo Gameboy Advance and the Sega Master System share very similar audio. The idea for the CD album came from the game ''Sonic Pinball Party'' where it celebrates some of Sega's past video games through a spin-off pinball Sonic game. I took the idea and put it into a compilation CD of Gameboy Advance and Sega Master System music from several different games, most notably the Sonic Advance series. The main instrument or sound in every single track is the periodic pulse sawtooth wave which sounds like a buzzing, electronic waveform pretending to sound like a real bass guitar. This particular sound is what both systems have in common although despite the Master System being a lot more limited in it's sound output, i'd argue the Master System does this waveform better. It sounds heavier and rougher on the Master System tracks and more softer and smoother on the Nintendo Gameboy Advance tracks. The Nintendo Gameboy Advance has no sound chip, the audio is all made through system RAM. It contains the 4 legacy Gameboy sound channels, 2 square wave channels, a noise channel and a dedicated wave channel plus 2 more PCM sound channels called A and B which stream stereo PCM audio crunched down to 8-bit in order to fit in the games. I initially found it strange and rather disappointing at first when I bought and played ''Sonic Advance'' for the first time as it sounded like something from the Master System just with advanced sampling slapped in and was wondering why they didn't make the Sonic Advance games sound more like the Mega Drive/Genesis? I suppose they do in a way as they use sampled drums with periodic noise hi-hats but the sawtooth wave for bass is clearly an overused 8-bit sound that the Mega Drive/Genesis games never used making the music to me at least more in line with 8-bit Nintendo and Sega music. Even though the Nintendo Gameboy Advance is a 32-bit handheld system, the sound hardware sounds very much 8-bit just with some advanced sampling mixed in. The Sega Master System side of the album uses the classic 4 channel PSG sound chip and cannot play sampled drums like the Gameboy Advance instead making percussion from it's square waves and sometimes noise channel, but no standard white noise beatboxing is heard on this CD, every Master System track uses the pulse sawtooth wave in 3 channel periodic mode. So come and play the roulette wheel and slot machines in Sega's casino and listen to some awesome swing and jazz music from such games as Sonic Advance 1, Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Pinball Party, Puyo Pop Fever, Daffy Duck In Hollywood, Lemmings and Star Trek.
