Carlow Community Radio, Ireland 1977

The people of Carlow town have taken enthusiastically to an RTÉ community radio project. From a mobile broadcasting unit based in the Market, Carlow Community Radio has brought the voices and views of the town to the airwaves. A wide variety of programmes devised by a local committee involved over two hundred people had the whole town listening in over six days, from 19 to 24 October. Carlow is just one participant in the RTÉ community radio scheme. Over the past two years Tuam, Drumshanbo, Gorey, Listowel, The Liberties in Dublin, Athboy, Waterford, Downings and Athlone are just some of the other regional locations where teams of volunteers compiled and presented radio programmes for their own communities. RTÉ provided the technical services and engineers, as well as dedicated radio producers to encourage, direct and oversee each locale’s output. One listener says that she has learned a lot about the town from listening to the radio this week, and would like to see it continue, I think it would be a very good thing for the town. One of the functions of RTÉ community radio is to encourage local talent, and Carlow musicians have had their chance to shine, like award-winning singer Yvonne Slater and popular showband The Hennessy Family. The station’s youngest radio presenter Deirdre O’Brien is just fourteen years old. The entire operation has taken place under the guidance of RTÉ Radio producer John Skehan, who is very pleased with how the Carlow broadcasts are going, given that none of the volunteers have any experience or background in radio, I think they’re absolutely remarkable. Chairman of Carlow Community Radio John Scott says that initial expectations for the venture were low, but its success has taken everyone by surprise. It has also encouraged a sense of place in the town, It has bound the people of Carlow together as a community. A ‘Newsround’ report broadcast on 30 October 1977. The reporter is Brendan O’Brien.
