In the late nineteenth century, in the midst of the British Raj, Charulata is the lonely and lovely wife of Bhupati, a learned and liberal newspaper editor. Neglected by her husband, who is engrossed in his political and financial affairs, she finds solace in the company of Amal, Bhupati's young and handsome cousin, who shares her passion for literature and poetry. As their friendship blossoms, Charulata discovers her own creative talents, but also develops a forbidden attraction for Amal, which threatens to shatter her marriage and her world. Charulata is a masterpiece of subtle and sensitive storytelling, directed by the incomparable Satyajit Ray, based on a novella "Nastanirh" by Rabindranath Tagore, and featuring a luminous performance by Madhabi Mukherjee as the titular heroine.
