It tells the story of Edward Durden, who flew to the deserted Island of San Miguel in Southern California together with his son Kent. The film features footage of their plane landing and taking off in very diverse scenery, as well as aerial shots taken from the belly of the aircraft. Durden and his son feed foxes, explore an abandoned ranch, look at tree casings of an old forest, explore the wreckage of a crashed B-25 bomber, interact with elephant seals, and explore the remains of a Native American settlement. (Note: Kent Durden later wrote the book "Gifts of an Eagle" which told the story of how his family adopted a Golden Eagle brought home to the family ranch in Carpinteria by his father!) 0:15 Title “Bold Journey”, 0:24 John Stephenson introduces himself, 1:17 Edward Durden is introduced and starts talking with Stephenson, 2:43 Durden and his son changing out small tires for larger ones (for beach landings) on his Piper J-3 Cub plane and prepare it for flight, 3:36 plane takes off, 4:20 San Miguel Island comes into view from plane, 4:59 plane lands on the island, 5:32 overview of Cuyler Harbor, 5:50 Memorial grave of Joao Rodrigues Cabrillo, 6:32 attracting a fox to come closer to the camera, 7:04 fox eats meat off a shoe, 7:38 Seagull chick in a nest, 8:00 plane takes off from the Island and flies over an abandoned ranch, 8:43 plane lands near ranch, 9:07 overview of the buildings of the ranch, 10:26 son captures a raven chick, 10:54 plane takes off near ranch, 11:31 plane lands in a sandy area, 11:52 remains of an old forest with casings of old trees, 12:55 piles of snail shells, 13:12 remains of a B-25 bomber that crashed there, 14:00 plane takes off in sandy area, 14:43 aerial view of Sea elephants, 15:10 plane lands on a beach, 15:37 son stands next to a group of sea elephants, 16:51 two male sea elephants fighting each other in the water, 17:49 sea lion pup, 18:18 son picks up a sea lion pup, 18:45 plane takes off from beach, 19:37 skull remains of a Native American, 20:08 the two look through debris left at a Native American settlement, 20:39 harvesting abalone from the water, 21:26 sand falling off rocks looking like a waterfall, 22:00 plane takes off, 22:05 Stephenson and Durden talking to each other in the studio, 23:59 Stephenson gives closing remarks to the camera, 24:24 Produced by Julian Lesser and Sherman A. San Miguel Island is the westernmost of California's Channel Islands, located across the Santa Barbara Channel in the Pacific Ocean. It is part of Channel Islands National Park, and almost all of the island (8,960 acres (36.3 km2)) has also been designated as an archaeological district on the National Register of Historic Places. Note: the B-25 crash mentioned in the episode occurred on July 5, 1943. The plane was searching for another B-24, called “the Eddie Rickenbacker,” that had gone missing a day earlier near Santa Barbara. Contact with the plane was lost about an hour after takeoff. Eight months later, in March 1944, the wreckage was found by shepherd Robert Brooks on the side of Green Mountain, the highest point on San Miguel Island. The 12 men who died were: Douglas Thornburg (who’d survived another B-24 crash less than a month earlier), Floyd P. Hart, Noah H. Yost, Bose Gorman, Justin M. Marshall, Vernon C. Stevens, Bernard Littman, Ralph S. Masterson, Lyle L. Frost, Walter Eisenbarth, Lee E. Salzer, and Henry L. Bair. May they rest in peace.
