CONTEXT: Cross has had feelings for Nightmare for quite some time he was fully aware Nightmare could never return his feelings because Nightmare is unable to feel love. so he planned to confess to him in hopes of getting rejected and move on. but when he confessed Nightmare accepted. Nightmare was curious on what it felt like to be in a relationship and Cross just to happened to give him an opportunity to experience it, Cross was surprised but after thinking about it for a while he was happy. though it still hurts because he knows a single "i love you" is a lie because he can't feel love, he wants to give him a chance to show genuine affection. but as months passed. Nightmare kind of neglected him, they've never kissed or held hands once. it didn't even feel like they were dating. Cross would always say "i love you" to Nightmare but he gets ignored. other times he attempts to kiss him but fails. sometimes Nightmare would be possesive and Cross wouldn't mind but other times Nightmare is manipulative and cruel. This upset him and he couldn't go on any longer so he decided to cut ties with Nightmare entirely by breaking up with him and leaving the team. to his surprised Nightmare let him but he also revealed he was planning to break up with him as well, he was only using Cross not because he was curious on what a relationship would feel like but because he wanted to try mentally hurting someone through romantic relationships. he's already hurt Cross alot (mentally) he's collected a handful of negativity from him that he no longer needs him. Cross was hurt even more when he revealed this. but it didn't matter anymore. he's leaving everything behind and having a fresh start with the help of Dream. but before he could leave he was killed off by Nightmare.
