San Diego Eagle1 visibility with CDTI

Midair Collison between Cessna 172M, N1285U and Experimental Sabreliner, NA265-60SC, N442RM Brown Field Municipal Airport San Diego, California August 16, 2015 WPR15MA243AB Animation disclaimer This computer animation reconstructs the Sabreliner co-pilot’s field of view during the 5 minutes leading up to the collision. A 180° field of view of the outside world from the right seat of the Sabreliner, constructed by joining the views from two cameras pointed along axes oriented 90° from each other, is shown on the bottom half of the screen. The airplane structure housing the cockpit windows is depicted as semi-transparent gray coloring overlaid on the outside views, and indicates the areas of the outside world obstructed from the co-pilot’s vision. The animation begins at 10:58:07 and ends at 11:03:10, the time of the collision, and is synchronized with an audio recording of Air Traffic Control (ATC) radio communications between Brown Tower and aircraft in the pattern at Brown Field. Content from the airplane’s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) is displayed as text blocks in the blue area in the top half of the screen, and Pacific Daylight Time is displayed in the upper right corner of the cockpit view. A reconstruction of the airborne traffic information that could have been provided by Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI) equipment, had it been available, is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. The animation also recreates the aural traffic alerts that would accompany the graphical presentation of these alerts on the CDTI. The aircraft labels in the CDTI presentation are included for clarity, but would not have been available on an actual CDTI under the circumstances of the accident. The animation is based on information extracted from the Sabreliner flight data recorder (FDR) and CVR, recorded radar data, the ATC transcript, and wreckage site evidence. The CDTI presentation was constructed based on radar surveillance data provided by the FAA.
