IS ULTRASOUND HARMFUL FOR THE BABY DURING PREGNANCY?

One of the very common questions that females and many time their family members ask is are so many ultrasounds harmful for the baby in the womb? The answer is simple NO. Ultrasound is the safest diagnostic technique for an expecting female. The investigations that are harmful for the child are the ones that use radiation or X-ray. Hence as a gynaecologist we never get a X ray or CT scan done for pregnant female. For last 40 years Ultrasound has been the safest tool for the pregnant females. During the course of normal preganancy (not high risk case) we generally get 4-5 ultrasounds done at various phase and each ultrasound has its own importance. At 6-8 week first ultrasound commonly called pregnancy scan is done to check for the heart beat of the baby. Next ultrasound is done at 10-12 weeks of pregnancy which is known as NT Scan or Level 1 Scan where in we check whether the spinal cord of the baby along with the nasal bone has formed or not. A blood test called Double Marker Test is also done at the same time to rule out any possibility of Down Syndrome. At 18 to 20 weeks the most important ultrasound is done which is called Level 2 scan or a anomaly scan. Here in we check if there is congenital deformity in the child and all the organs have formed properly. Next is the growth scan which is done around 28 weeks to check if the growth of the baby and the amniotic fluid in the womb is sufficient. The last scan done of a color doppler which is done around 32 weeks to check if the blood supply to all the organs is proper or not.
