Had an amazing day out in the wilderness for this run! Which also included hiking in some of the steeper areas. I passed Minaret Lake, Cecile, Iceberg, Ediza, Garnet, Ruby, Emerald, and Thousand Island Lakes. It was fun to link up so many amazing lakes, but it was also a bit of tease because I wished I had more time to spend at each lake, taking in the grandeur of this corner of the Sierra Nevada. It was a beautiful, calm, clear day out trail running in the mountains! Here's a recap of the route: August 28th 2022 - I woke up early and drove from home in Mammoth down to Devil's Postpile National Monument. I started my run from the ranger station just after 6:45am, crossed the Middle Fork San Joaquin River by Soda Springs, and continued north up the John Muir Trail. At Johnston Meadow I stayed left to continue up the Minaret Creek Trail and followed it up past Minaret Lake to Cecile Lake. Looking up at the Minarets there, practically at their base, is an awesome sight. Between Minaret and Cecile Lakes the trail becomes a bit faint at times. Traversing the east shore of Cecile there isn't really a trail at all, as one must boulder hop over to the outlet of the lake. From this point there is a use/faint trail that you can follow down to Iceberg Lake. It is not maintained, and can be a little loose and steep in sections, but is fairly straightforward. This section can hold a lot of snow earlier in the season so either avoid it at that time or bring gear (ice axe/microspikes/crampons) you need to feel comfortable and safe. The trail becomes well established again when you reach the outlet of Iceberg Lake, where you can follow it down to Ediza Lake and along Shadow Creek. From Shadow Creek I turned left to rejoin the JMT north heading up and over a ridge to Garnet Lake. Continued along the trail here, up and over another ridge to Ruby, Emerald, and eventually Thousand Island Lake. At the outlet turn right to head south on the PCT for about mile before turning right again to head down the River Trail. Follow the trail for 10 runnable miles down the valley cut by the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, passing by cascades and meadows. I arrived back at the Devil's Postpile ranger station just after 3:45pm. According to the GPS data that I recorded on my Garmin watch, the stats for this route are: 29.4 miles with 4,912 feet of elevation gain, 9 hours 1 minute elapsed. Max elevation was 10,300 feet above sea level (Cecile Lake). I filtered water using a Katadyn BeFree filter. I ran in HOKA Speedgoat 4 GTX trail running shoes. I used a Ultimate Direction SJ Ultra Vest 2.0 running pack. Link to Strava file: / strava Please let me know if you have any other questions about the route. Thanks so much for watching! - mammothjoe
