But by 1969, the term progressive rock had scarcely been invented, and certainly no one had instructed audiences that they couldn’t dance. After about 40 years as a professional musician, it wasn’t until I retired that I played a set of Motown covers, all in 4/4, in a local bar, and it was such fun. Popular music risks its neck when it severs its connection with dance. Given that my friends and I have consistently offered undanceable music, it’s a miracle that we got away with so much and stayed afloat. #billbrufordsearthworks
