Kortrijk's town hall is located on the Grote Markt and has a late Gothic facade. The statues of the Counts of Flanders (on the facade) were replaced by new ones in the 19th century during a major restoration. The Belfry is located on the Grote Markt. The history of the Belfry goes back to the 14th century. The Belfry is a remnant of the medieval cloth hall that used to take place here and has 4 pointed turrets, a carillon of 48 bells and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The last thorough repairs date from after the Second World War. The two golden figures by the clocks are called Manten and Kalle, and let you know what time it is. Mercury, the god of commerce, is at the top. Did you know that the ringing of the bells in the Belfry had a specific meaning such as: -the opening and closing of the city gates, -festive bells that rang during all kinds of festive occasions, -a kind of work clock that indicated the start and end of the working day, -a clock that indicated when it was no longer allowed to walk through the streets without a torch. The St. Martin's Church is the main church of Kortrijk and has two distinct styles on the outside. Upon entering, you recognize the features of a hall church (the oldest part). After a fire in 1832, the choir was built and given a neo - Gothic style.
