Spring is coming soon and its time to get sweet potato slips started! Sweet potatoes are not the same as Irish or White Potatoes. They grow from slips that form from the original sweet potatoes. These slips are the beginnings of sweet potato vines. Sweet potato vines can reach 10-15ft long and are a beautiful vine for mid to late summer trellis'! Each slip once rooted can produce 5-10 sweet potatoes in my experience. Each grocery store sweet potato can produce round after round of slips! So, endless sweet potatoes! Sweet potatoes need 100-120 days to mature and require WARM soil temps. So they are the perfect root crop to grow all summer in the southern states! They only require about 8" deep of well draining soil and the vines can act as a living mulch in the dead heat of our Texas summers.
