Abandoned Historic Napoleonic Tunnels! Western Heights Dover

In this explore, we are back in Dover where we take a look at both the Detached Bastion, and North Center Bastion at the Western Heights of Dover! The Western Heights are dominated by a massive series of fortifications. Three forts are linked by deep ditches to enclose the hilltop, where soldiers and artillery were positioned to prevent the port falling to a French invasion. The defenses were begun in the 1770's, extended during the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), and modernized between 1853 and 1870. They were occupied by the Army until 1961. The bastions saw very little use after their time, with only local defense use during both World Wars. Big thanks to Shaun and the IKS group for showing us around.
