My Name is Alice, I created The Mini ADHD Coach in august 2020 when I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 29. After years of questioning, therapy, burnout, and chaotic career path changes, I finally understood why I struggled with so many things. So I decided to share what I learned to raise awareness around ADHD and help the ADHD community thrive. 💕 To learn more about ADHD visit https://www.theminiadhdcoach.com ⭐️Join me on Instagram @the_mini_adhd_coach 🔗 Interesting articles ADHD & Feeling always tired: https://www.theminiadhdcoach.com/post... If you are experiencing symptoms of ADHD, it’s best to see a professional for a diagnosis. So, how can ADHD affect our relationships? If you, your loved one or both of you have ADHD, it’s important that you learn about how this might be impacting your relationship. The better you understand this, the more able you are to take steps to ensure your relationship is a happier one. The most common symptoms of ADHD in adults are difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, talking a lot, getting stressed easily and being a little disorganized. As relationships require attentiveness and effort, finding it hard to concentrate may result in a partner feeling as though they aren’t being heard. The same goes for talking too much and zoning out during important conversations. Forgetfulness can also impact our ability to plan nice events with our loved one, which is a pretty important part of maintaining a healthy, loving relationship. Other symptoms that might affect your relationship include impulsiveness and difficulty keeping our emotions in check. But with better understanding, it really is possible to maintain a healthy, loving relationship. It’s really important that you or your partner, whoever does not have the ADHD diagnosis, understands the associated symptoms as much as possible. That allows your partner to really understand what you might be going through at any time, or vis versa. Communication is always key Communication is one of, if not the most important aspect of any relationship. And this also goes for any relationship that includes someone with an ADHD diagnosis. If you are the one with ADHD, ensure you’re doing all you can to educate your loved one on the signs and symptoms, that might impact your relationship. If it is your partner who has ADHD, do everything you can to learn about their condition. So, what are some helpful strategies to help with ADHD symptoms within the relationship? Well, each symptom of ADHD comes with some different tips and techniques, that can help manage that through your relationship. If you’re struggling with distraction, your partner may feel as though you aren’t giving them due attention… and this may well be the case. But it’s not your fault. However, there are some ways to ensure this common symptom isn’t impacting your relationship as much as it might. It’s important that your partner doesn’t build up feelings of resentment, so do encourage them to speak up regularly when they feel your distraction is causing problems. The more they do this, the easier it becomes. And try not to take it personally; this symptom is part of your condition and has no correlation to how much you love or care for your partner. Moreover, it’s even better if you can keep track of your own attention span. If you feel yourself zoning out, try to be honest about it. Tell your partner what has happened and ask them if they can repeat what they were saying. If it’s forgetfulness that is impacting your relationship, try to combat this by setting reminders for activities that you and your partner might have planned. Forgetting a lovely activity that you planned together probably won’t go down too well and can come across as pretty rude. Therefore, setting reminders on your phone, or writing out notes on a whiteboard or stickies will go a long way toward keeping you on track. And your partner will no doubt appreciate this commitment to spending time together, and prioritizing activities with them. At the end of the day, the most important thing is communication, for both of you. Remember to always kind to yourselves… you’re a team and you’re in this together.
