Making sure you don't lift your up too abruptly and letting the air escape are essential in maintaining a stable tone, he says. Placing your finger back down on the clarinet is just as important as how you lift your finger up. If you smack down on the key, the clarinet will make a "pop", creating an interruption in a lyrical legato section you may have to play. Those "pop" sounds create consonants, which is something you want to avoid in legato. Ricardo Morales compares proper clarinet playing fingers to an octopus: there's not one action that is frozen. Every joint is connected to each other and everything is one curvy movement. Every move is deliberate. Even if it's as simple as pressing down on the key, you have to feel the weight of the spring as you press down and as you release. Doing this will help you eliminate the pop. A way to test whether or not you're doing this correctly is to play each note very slowly. If you're doing it correctly, it should sound like a glissando up and down as you press and release.
