"Fear Of The Dark" has long been considered by Iron Maiden fans to be one of their greatest songs. It was released in 1992 on the album of the same name and has since gone on to become a classic featured in all their live performances. The first video in this Fear Of The Dark guitar lesson video series contains two guitar parts that are either playing in unison or an octave apart. Since there are no true guitar harmonies here, it still sounds great with just one guitar player playing either of the two parts. The key to mastering this riff is to keep the constant string of 16th notes as accurate rhythmically as possible. The helps give it a driving sound. If you will be playing with another guitar player that will be even more true since they will be playing the same 16th note patterns as well. It is essential for both players to lock into the groove. I chose to use all downstrokes when playing these 16th notes. That helps to keep a consistent tone throughout the riff. However, if you have trouble playing downstrokes in rapid succession for such an extended period of time perhaps you can experiment with alternate picking it instead. Starting in the second video lesson, we will work through all the rhythm guitar parts found after the intro section in "Fear Of The Dark". There are both clean and high gain rhythm sections, but everything is kept pretty simple except for one riff that requires some pretty fast alternate picking. In the third video lesson, I will show you how to play all 4 guitar solo sections note-for-note. There are some nice slow melodic solos along with some crazy fast legato laden soloing. That is one of the fun things about playing Iron Maiden songs, there are usually multiple guitar solos with each having it's own distinctive playing style.
