A big thank you to https://www.oembimmerparts.com for sponsoring this video and providing the parts. Check them out if you're looking to do this job. The running joke is, it seems like every BMW leaks oil from the factory. Well, that's not far off. BMW never seems to be able to fix the oil pan gasket they use on their 6 cylinder engines. Eventually the rubber goes hard and stops sealing properly and the thing leaks, and because the engine is mounted at an angle, the oil level is always above where the gasket sealing area is, so it leaks really badly. This problem usually develops after a certain mileage or number of years. Every BMW owner knows this and almost none of them have it fixed because it's an expensive job. But you know what, it's really not that hard to do yourself and I show you how in this video. 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:18 Prep before the job: jack up car & remove underbody splash shields 00:01:02 Specialty tools you will need 00:03:43 Overview of the job 00:07:40 Parts needed 00:09:06 Drain the oil 00:09:18 Steering linkage pinch bolt removal (optional) 00:10:18 Remove plastic shields and triangular cross brace 00:11:20 Unbolt the engine mounts 00:11:38 Coolant cross over pipe bolts & removing engine fan 00:13:11 Disconnect power steering pressure hose mount 00:13:32 Unbolting the subframe 00:16:02 Unplug the headlight sensor connector 00:16:19 One more bolt for the coolant crossover pipe 00:16:44 Disconnect steering linkage (optional) 00:17:05 Disconnect the sway bar (can be done before dropping the frame) 00:18:44 Loosening the lower suspension links (optional) 00:20:23 Disconnect ATF cooler pipe from oil pan 00:21:00 Remove power steering pump from oil pan 00:25:45 Remove the oil pan 00:28:53 Here's why BMW oil pan gaskets leak 00:29:39 A word about the oil pan bolts 00:31:05 Remove engine mounts 00:35:01 New parts have arrived, oil pan is clean, ready to go back on 00:37:12 Putting the oil pan back in 00:38:45 Oops, near disaster!!
