The Book of 3 Breaths - An Artist's Book Flip Through

Hi, Michelle Walker here from Serenity Studios and in this video, I share with you a new project I've just completed - The Book of 3 Breaths. I run through how I made this artist's book and its internal signatures (booklets), as well as some of the painting and collage techniques I used throughout. I repurposed a hard cover book I found at a charity shop. I cut the internal pages out and made 2 signatures (booklets) from watercolour paper. I painted and collaged the cover and made pieces in silver for the closing mechanism. The concept of title came to me back in June, when like many people around the world including my part of Australia was in lockdown for Covid and the Black Lives Matter protests were happening in the US and Australia. I was also at that time, in an art group called "Breathing the Land" with Virginia Reid (Byron Community College). It occurred to me that we were in a time of corona virus, which is a respiratory problem, the Black Lives Matter protests, which was anchored around George Floyd's 'I can't breath' statement and the 3rd breath came from the art course I was doing with some fellow artists called "Breathing the Land". So it felt like these 3 elements of my life were talking about the breath, and the breath is such an important connector of life in this physical body with our creative selves. I took the idea that each opening set of pages in the book to be something I would do within 3 breaths, so they were very simple moves. I didn't succeed in terms of keeping them so minimal that I could complete them within the time it took me to take 3 breaths, but I really enjoyed paring them down so they were simplified. This project was inspired by Adriana Ameigh (https://ameighart.com) a fellow member of Alice Sheridan's Connected Artist Club - thank you, Adriana. If you enjoyed this video, please leave a comment.
