After a devastating missile strike in Kramatorsk, which caused significant damage to an industrial and transport area in the city, Universal Aid Ukraine arrived on the scene to provide aid to any potential victims. The cloudy air visible in the footage is the dust from the falling building debris. I accompanied one of Universal Aid Ukraine's volunteers, Leo, to the main area of destruction, which had been grievously impacted by the missile. A civilian bus was among the many vehicles destroyed in the attack, with fires still raging throughout the compound. Destruction and chaos reigned supreme. As we walked over the scattered fragments of bricks and reinforced concrete, we spotted several individuals on top of the main debris of the building. This was not a good sign. They were throwing bricks aside, shouting in Ukrainian, and equipped with flashlights. Leo unshouldered his medic bag, preparing his gear. The situation became dire when they informed Leo that someone was trapped under the rubble. We silently prayed for their safety. I stepped away to quickly capture footage of an exploded and burning car. But then I suddenly realized the sound of bricks hitting the ground had stopped. I turned around, and the rescuers, including Leo, were motionless. The rescue mission was over. "Do you know what the situation is?" I asked Leo. "One dead," he replied. We didn't speak for a while. I climbed up the landscape of shattered concrete and twisted metal and stood alongside the rescuers. In the pit, a man knelt silently. His head was down. His hand clasped onto his friend's knee. His friend lay still, lifeless. His face was caved in, crushed by the fallen concrete. Blood oozed out the sides of his face, staining the white dust a dark red. We all stood in silence, watching as the man mourned for his friend. And then it came: the air raid siren went off, forcing us to run for cover. We knew that we were in danger because the Russians often double-tapped sites to kill firefighters and paramedics attempting to rescue victims. We kept running, and as I looked over my shoulder, I saw him there, still sitting by his friend. Instagram: / psidamite Medium: / yasserojas
