On normal hard and softlures only 45% of the contacts are landed. The reason is, that the use of big hooks on traditionally mounted lures - needed to create good hook exposure and enough strength to cope with leverage – leads to inferior penetration and consequently low landing rates. But - with the new Westin Release-Rigs enabling the use of much smaller hooks, it´s now possible land 85% of your contacts. At the same time smaller hooks with smaller barbs will lead to shorter unhooking time, smaller hook wounds and less bleeding, making it the perfect method for catch and release. Imagine what this would do for your catches – and for the welfare of the fish. Smaller hooks penetrate better and give a better hook hold – plus helps reducing unhooking time and damage to the fish. But – its only possible to exploit these important advantages of smaller hooks, if they are mounted in a completely new way: In order to obtain perfect exposure of the smaller hooks, they must be mounted on a rig running a few centimeters under the lure. And – in order not to overstress hooks or hook hold if leverage arise, the rig must be 100% leverage free and the lure must be able to slide up the trace during the fight. This is the philosophy behind the release-rig – originally invented by Jens Bursell in 2007. The Westin Release-Rig is a highly flexible system, which can be used for both hard-, soft- and hybrid lures in most sizes. The adjustable front trace – being the same for all lures – is combined with terminal rigs of varying lengths and types to fit any of your lures. How it works: The lure is mounted on the Westin Release-Rig with the adjustable cross-lock on the front trace. Depending on the size of your lure and the rear hook position you want - you choose the length of release stinger to fit your needs – and mount it at the end of the front trace. Slide the adjustable stoppers up or down the trace, so the rig will hang 1-1,5 cm under the lure – and semi-fix the rig to the lure with the release-clips. You are now ready to fish. During cast and retrieve, the hooks will hang perfectly exposed under the lure, but in the same second the fish strikes – the rig will release from the lure sliding up the trace eliminating leverage from the lure 100%.
