“Stop sending beggars, or else…” Saudi Arabia warns Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif in damage control mode

Saudi Arabia has issued a warning to Pakistan over the presence of Pakistani beggars in the Kingdom. Mohammed bin Salman Govt has threatened to restrict the issuance of pilgrimage visas to Pakistanis. Some Pakistani people enter Saudi Arabia under the guise of religious pilgrimage and beg for charity. Saudi authorities expressed concerns that unchecked activities of beggars could negatively impact Umrah pilgrims. Shehbaz Sharif Government is now in damage control mode to ensure that Riyadh doesn't act on its threat. The issue was discussed in a meeting between Pakistan's Interior Minister and the Saudi Envoy in Islamabad. Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency has been tasked to crackdown on such networks of ‘Beggars’ Mafia’. “The beggars’ mafia is damaging Pakistan’s image,” said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. Last Month, 11 alleged beggars were caught at Karachi airport after being interrogated by FIA. Rising inflation and poor economic conditions are the main reasons for the situation raised in the past few months. Earlier, Pakistan surrendered the quota allotted by Saudi Arabia for Hajj pilgrims as applications fell short of the available seat.
