Scenes from the 2012 Heiva I Kauai Tahiti Festival at Kapaa Beach Park

Scenes from the 11th annual Heiva I Kauai Iaorana Tahiti, August 4 and 5 2012 at Kapaa Beach Park on the island of Kauai. This year's Heiva features competition and exhibition performances of exciting Otea, Aparima and Ahupurotu dances on both days. Heiva I Kauai is an international Tahitian dance and drumming competition which includes solo and group competitors from throughout Hawaii, the Mainland and Japan features multi-cultural exhibition dancing, singing and an extensive craft fair with an array of items from south and western Pacific islands. Tahitian dance and drumming and Samoan fire knife dance workshops were held on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday morning, a traditional welcoming ceremony started the festivities. Gates opened to the public at 9 AM with solo competition beginning at 10 AM. Solo categories included traditional Otea vahine and tane, for junior, senior and master (age 26+) divisions. Group categories included Otea, Aparima, Ahupurotu, and Tahitian drumming. Group competition began Saturday afternoon and continued through Sunday. Please note that schedules will be adjusted to accommodate the number of entries. On Sunday, exhibition dancing began at 10 AM with group competition following. Sunday ended with solo, group and drumming award presentations. Festival participants enjoyed a weekend of unique Tahitian entertainment, with an array of Polynesian arts and crafts, delicious local foods, craft making workshops and dance and coconut husking contests. Admission was $5 a day at the door. Children age 6 and under were free. Heiva I Kauai Iaorana Tahiti is grateful for support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Kauai.
