This is the fabulous Triple Gears Lift, from Wood Marble Machine.com - with special modifications that I made. Although this is a very well-designed track composed of quality materials, I replaced over 50 of the stock metal and plastic barriers with handmade WOOD parts I carved using high-quality pine, sculpted with a Dremel rotary tool. With the metal and plastic pieces replaced by wood, the track now produces a richer, more organic, and overall warmer sound. I covered the motor, wiring, and battery components so they are not visible and to reduce the motor sound. The assembly time plus crafting the new wood parts required over 50 hours of work, but what a great experience! I think I have discovered a new hobby. Marbles on wood can be a soothing form of white noise and are interesting to look at. Marble tracks are reminiscent of childhood joys; they are innocent, happy, and fun. Looking at a track in action can also be quite meditative. As a simple exercise, watch the entire track or choose a specific part, such as a funnel or the elevator. Gently focus your attention on the track and as you watch the marbles go and listen to the sounds, you will find that you can distract yourself from stress or unwanted thoughts with very little effort. Marble tracks can also calm a racing mind - somehow the speeding marbles and your speeding thoughts cancel each other out. This video was recorded with high-end stereo Rode microphones because they are designed for recording drums and produce a crisp yet warm tone that is soft and pleasant. Sonically, the marble track resembles an unpitched wooden instrument generating all manner of rolls, raps and taps, similar to rain but more percussive, as the marbles race and patter all about. There are a total of 40 marbles. The marbles are small, with a diameter of 3/8 inches or 10 millimeters. 38 of the marbles are metal ball bearings, the remaining 2 marbles are ceramic - one black and the other white. Follow the white or black marble to see how it winds its way through the track! The unit is powered by a small electric motor using 3 AAA batteries. A large battery-operated flip clock marks the time from midnight to 3 a.m. Marble tracks are a lot of fun, but I discovered that getting a track to run continually for hours without stalls or balls falling out can be a challenge. To solve this, I modified or added new components including new wood barriers in places where there were none, particularly in locations I noticed balls would fall out or "escape" from the track. It now works (nearly) flawlessly; in this 3-hour video only one ball fell out! (I'll fix that....)
