1947 SOUTHWESTERN INDIAN DANCES INTER-TRIBAL INIDAN CEREMONIAL GALLUP NEW MEXICO 62924

Southwestern Indian Dances is a short 1947 film that is a part of Dudley Pictures Corporation’s This Land Of Ours series. The film documents the annual Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial held in Gallup, NM, which “strives to be the oldest, most cultural aware and respected event in the U.S.” The Ceremonial features a rodeo, traditional dances, and fine arts and artifacts of the Indians of the American Southwest (Navajo, Pueblo, Kiowa, Apache, and Jemez). The film opens with footage of the parade through Gallup, celebrating the Ceremonial. Members of the different tribes parade down the street in traditional and ceremonial dress (00:25). Women walk with pottery balanced on their heads (01:15). Men compete in the rodeo, events such as bull riding and wagon races (01:44). Kiowa Indians perform a traditional dance (02:35). Jemez Indians perform the Buffalo Dance (02:54). Apache dance the Crown Dance, also known as the “Devil Dance;” the Apache dancers represent crowned messengers in the dance that serves as a purification ritual for the tribe’s young women (04:16). The film shows a panoramic shot of the landscape adjacent to Gallup. A man plays a drum atop a rocky outcrop; Pueblo dancer Tony Whitecloud dances below the drummer, performing the Eagle Dance (05:00). Jemez Indians show the camera their dress for the sacred Harvest Dance (05:55), which they then perform. Tony Whitecloud performs the hoop dance (07:21), considered one of the most spectacular dances. Later, he shows off his agility, nimbly dancing through a single hoop. The Whitecloud brothers perform a war dance on the rocky crest on top of a dessert mountain.
