A panic attack can be seriously debilitating to the individual. In such a situation it is more severe than fear or phobia. The person may almost become like a statue, unable to think or do anything and this can cause very severe distress and if this recurs again and again, the person is prone to anxiety not only during the attack, but keeps thinking when the next attack is going to happen. It is an extreme form of anxiety and apprehension. The acronym is AWARE. A is to accept and acknowledge the condition. So first acknowledge this condition. There is nothing wrong in a panic attack. So acceptance means you have to learn realistic ways of dealing with this panic attacks. W is wait, watch and work. Wait means wait for the symptoms, Watch means watch out for what are the effects on you and if necessary, keep a diary to record what are the events that occur and what are the thoughts that you get panic attacks. Try to do some deep breathing exercise, or try to move around a little because the more you are frozen in immobility, the more difficult it is for you to do something and the panic attack may prolong. All panic attack will end, but you will have to endure it till the panic attack subsides. Look at the people, things, objects in your near surroundings, try to divert your mind to any if these and you will see that your attacks will subside in due course. So coming to the next steps, once you come to this level of action, go back to the level of acknowledgement, acceptance, wait and watch and work with actions and when you will realize that you have come to the “ E part of “ AWARE” and you will realize that your panic will subside. So be “ AWARE” and you can avoid panic attacks.
