I think what people get wrong so often about Spuffy is focusing on their moments bringing out the worst in each other and thinking that’s where the story ends, when their story is actually centered on the redemption of two broken individuals and the hope of redeeming selfish love. As Buffy struggles between her slayer and girl halves, Spike struggles with being a man or killer. They both wonder if they can love, they protect dawn, they loved and lost their mothers, they love with their whole beings, they attempt to move on from their “forever” love with blondes they don’t feel as strongly for, they enjoy poetry, they both died and came back alive at the hands of a vampire and then again were resurrected after their big sacrifice to save the world. even in season two, their storylines parallel one another as they lose their partner, feel incomplete without them, then fight to save the world. Spike is the selfish and indulgent version of Buffy, of course, but still a mirror of her. The way they both see similar darkness in each other and fight against it to bring out the light. they show that they can get over their connection of love to pain and suffering, and find the kind of selfless love that doesn’t hurt. To move their way out of the shadows and darkness into the blinding light, the light they both see at the end of season six. the light that drives both of them to sacrifice themselves for the ones they love. A love that doesn’t burn and consume until there’s nothing left, but an enduring love without expectations for more. Buffy can truly be “alone” with Spike, the cowboy like her!!!!!
