Topic: Can Airborne Geophysics Play a Role in Exploring for Natural Hydrogen? Meeting date: 19th August 2024 Speaker: Desmond FitzGerald is founder and now former director of the Intrepid group of companies. Des obtained a BE (Mining with Hons.) in 1969 and a PhD in Mining in 1977, both from the University of Melbourne. Des co-wrote the INTREPID geophysical processing and mapping software product. Abstract: Aeromagnetic methods are being repurposed and upgraded to try and meet the demand for critical minerals in the energy transition: - Either direct or indirect expressions of naturally occurring Helium and Hydrogen and Rare Earth minerals and other critical minerals, requires higher precision geophysics surveying and upgraded transformations of these observations, - both measured gradients and calculated gradients reflect the boundaries for pipes, strandlines, redox activation sites, - calibration against known field occurrences of resources leads to easily extending the brown fields, and - the required resolution in the field demands that high sample rates, closer to the ground acquisition, tensor gradients, are part of the mix to meet the challenge of finding and delineating the near surface expression.
