Episode 427 Jack (Arthur Leslie) informs Albert (Jack Howarth), Stan (Bernard Youens), and Charlie (Gordon Rollings) about Ena's (Violet Carson) mysterious intervention on Len’s (Peter Adamson) behalf. Emily Ainsworth (Hilary Mason) confronts a mystified Len about his past history of boozing and womanising. Irma (Sandra Gough) inadvertently adds fuel to the fire by showing up and flaunting herself at him to win her bet with Dennis (Philip Lowrie) but Len is pleased when a glamorous blonde called April (Lynne Furlong) arrives. Hilda (Jean Alexander) sells paper to Bernie Sparks (Michael Collins) resulting in a small profit for the men. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) and Dennis are uninterested in Emily’s (Eileen Derbyshire) sales pitch for Gamma Garments. Elsie refuses to let Dennis fix a broken doorknob instead expecting Ena to pay. Minnie (Margot Bryant) reports on her observations of Len's visitors. Elsie attempts to make Ena pay for repairs but her attention is diverted by April. Len interviews April who makes romantic advances causing him discomfort. April believes she has secured the job which pleases the men but not Annie (Doris Speed). Hilda reads Stan's cards to predict his next job. Elsie and Ena quarrel over the repairs. Ena pays Lucille (Jennifer Moss) to acquire a copy of the rent act. “Widow” Norma Gee (Patti Brooks) is interviewed for the job next. Len prefers her down-to-earth nature, enjoys her cooking and offers her the job. April makes the mistake of insulting Elsie prompting Elsie to swiftly cut her down to size.
