LEAF Surgery S2.E7 | Accelerating & Demonstrating the Journey to Net Zero

With climate at the forefront of challenge and ambitious industry goals to reach Net Zero, farming holds a unique position to offer solutions to climate change mitigation. Farmers have proved they are forward-thinking, innovative and adaptable in using different methods, tools and collaboration on this journey so far. Hear from two of these farmers, Stephen Shields, Technical Director of Huntapac Produce Ltd, and Valerie Whyte, Technical Manager of Springfield Farms, to explore their journey to more low-carbon farming. Huntapac is a fourth-generation family-owned business, they farm 1500 hectares of root vegetables, primarily carrots and parsnips on land extending from Norfolk to Inverness, with their main headquarters in Lancashire. As a pioneering commercial producer, Huntapac is committed to reaching its net zero targets and has developed its own net zero field trials, which are an important focus for current and future development. Understanding and maintaining commercial viability whilst transitioning to net zero is a key objective of the business. Situated in Northern Limpopo, South Africa, Springfield Farms is a family run business, comprising 2000 hectares of avocados, macadamia nuts, pecans, timber, and woodland. The Whyte family are passionate about environmentally friendly farming and have introduced a range of measures on farm to conserve and protect local wildlife and vegetation, with a particular focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). As a pro-active business, the Whyte’s want to make every effort to change their farming system and be a pioneer in their journey towards net zero, in a country with limited sustainable incentives and infrastructure.
