Most of the residents of Whittier live in the Begich Tower, a "town under one roof" high rise. Whittier is a unique place, it has its own distinctive charm, there's something special in small towns in Alaska, especially in those integrated into mass tourism and fishing. Whittier found the sustainable population level, floating around 200 people in the past 40 years and is absolutely not decaying like some of the small towns in the continental U.S. down south. But the solitude and chillness of the place give the town an image of a lonely fisherman living in his hut by the sea, not thinking high of the busy civilization.
