On 14 May 2001, Nigel Farage MEP of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) attended the party's manifesto launch. Alongside party leader Jeffrey Titford and UKIP election candidates Damian Hockney and Craig Mackinlay, Farage made the case for holding a referendum on the issue of the UK's membership of the European Union. In the course of doing so, he highlighted a recent MORI poll showing that 52% of people who had an opinion on the issue wanted Britain to leave the EU.
