192 - Twin City Model Railroad Museum - A Big Steam Locomotive – Is it a Mallet or Not?

This video is a continuation of a Zoom Discussion about Steam Locomotives by a group of Model Railroaders / Rail Enthusiasts. One of the members of the group, had commented that many people call any articulated steam locomotive 'a Mallet'. He asked that there would be a discussion about the Mallet - what it is and what it is not. The details: Anatole Mallet's invention was an articulated locomotive that used "compound expansion", the process of using the same steam twice by rerouting exhaust steam from the small diameter "high pressure" rear cylinders into larger diameter "low pressure" front cylinders. Early 4-cylinder articulated locomotives hence earned the nickname "Mallet". Most of those were compound locos until later when 4-cylinder "Single Expansion" variants seemed to show advantages over compounds. By that time, the industry had made other improvements, including: more efficient fire boxes, boilers, superheating and feedwater heaters. These improvements made compounding less advantageous and not worth the additional maintenance and wear on the track. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you and your family would like to see models of steam locomotives and other trains operate - Please Visit the Twin City Model Railroad Museum Open every Friday Saturday Sunday and Monday The Regular Museum hours are Friday 10 AM - 3 PM Saturday 10AM – 5 PM Sunday 12 PM – 5 PM Monday 10 AM – 3 PM Spooky Trains runs during October until Halloween.
