Burning Money Experiment (Chemistry)

This experiment looks like we are burning a one hundred dollar bill (!), but actually we are transferring heat energy from a chemical reaction to water molecules. The high specific heat of water allows it to absorb the heat energy from the combustion reaction, protecting the hundred dollar bill from the flames. ▶️ Get supplies for the burning money experiment: https://www.beardedscienceguy.com/how... ▶️ Procedures 1. Pour equal parts 91% isopropyl alcohol and water in a heat resistant container. Make sure to stir the solution so that both liquids are mixed together well. 2. Dip your money in the solution until it is completely covered in the mixture. If any part of the bill is dry, it will actually burn when you light it! 3. Light the money, and watch it burn. ▶️ How the burning money experiment works: Even though flames are present, the money itself is not burning. The heat energy generated by the combustion of the isopropyl alcohol is being absorbed by the water present. If you don't use enough water, the money will burn after the water evaporates. ❗️ One last piece of safety advice--the drips of isopropyl alcohol are also flammable, so don't perform this experiment over a flammable surface or it will catch your table on fire.
