Jiah Khan was an up-and-coming actor who had starred in popular movies like the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Nishabd and Aamir Khan's Ghajini. But on June 3, 2013, she was found hanging in her Mumbai home. She was only 25 years old. Her death sent shockwaves across the nation and shook Bollywood to its core. Soon after Jiah's death, her mother Rabia alleged that her daughter's then-boyfriend and fellow actor - Sooraj Pancholi was responsible for her death. Sooraj is from an influential Bollywood family - his father Aditya Pancholi is an actor as well. Sooraj and Jiah reportedly started dating in 2012. 4 days after Jiah's death, her sister recovered a 6-page alleged suicide note in which Sooraj was blamed for driving her to take her own life. Pancholi was arrested on June 11 on charges of abetment to suicide. Less than a month later, Sooraj Pancholi walked out of jail after being granted bail, and the case was eventually handed over to the CBI. The twists and turns continued - After CBI took over the case, Aditya Pancholi filed a 100 crore defamation case against Rabia Khan. During her deposition, Rabia Khan had told the CBI court that Pancholi used to subject Jiah to physical and verbal abuse. She also alleged the police and CBI had not collected legal evidence to prove her daughter had committed suicide. The agency went on to file a chargesheet against Sooraj Pancholi, alleging abetment to suicide. In his 313-page statement filed before the court, Sooraj Pancholi claimed the investigation and chargesheet were false. He claimed prosecution witnesses had testified against him on the behest of Rabia Khan, the police and the CBI. Rabia Khan continued to claim that the injuries on her daughter’s body were consistent with murder. The case was then transferred to a special CBI court in 2021.
