The new Exist album "Hijacking the Zeitgeist" will be out April 12th! Blue Light Infinite is the opening track to the album & is coincidentally the first song that I worked on for it. It took us a couple revisions to settle on the opening tom groove. At first, if I recall correctly, I programmed something similar to how the drums are at 1:05, but Max had the idea of a Meshuggah-esque groove with different accent placements on the first & second half of each rep. The song I drew specific inspiration from was the intro to "Glints Collide" off of Nothing. So with that in mind, I wrote up this tom groove! Very stoked with how it turned out & the same can be said for the rest of the drums on the album. That was one of the coolest things about this writing process for me. Pretty much all the music came together from Max sending me stuff WITHOUT any programmed drums & I wrote my drums alongside just the guitars. Most of the time, what I wrote is what we kept but there were a few instances, this intro in particular, where we talked about it & collaborated together to dial in the parts. Having that kind of freedom, but also pressure, when writing drums is something very special to me. I mean, if I'd written some wack parts, I'm sure the guys would've let me know lol. But going into a song with zero reference as to what the drums should do & just going off my intuition is a very exciting & creative challenge. In a lot of ways, I got to truly decide how I wanted these songs to feel. A lot of the time, my parts happened to go along with what Max had kind of envisioned the drums to do, feel-wise, but other times they were different. Sometimes it worked great & we kept it & other times we messed around with it a bit until it felt right. All this is not to say that I hate when a songwriter DOES have some demo drums programmed in the initial song they send me. It's absolutely a helpful tool & honestly makes my job easier, so if a composer has drum ideas for something I'm working on, by all means, I'd like to hear them. Sometimes there's a lot to be developed & I heavily alter the parts & other times, I'm only making minor tweaks, changing fills, accents & applying my overall feel to the song. Just minimal stuff, & that's fine too. Whatever it takes to create the best drum composition possible - something that truly makes the song as good as it can be, is what I will always strive for. So for this album, writing my parts from scratch, talking about the parts with the guys & then going from there was a very dope process. I truly encourage everyone to check out the new record when it drops in a few days. Some of my favorite drumming I've ever done on some of the coolest music I've ever been a part of! There are a few moments in this video where you'll see me looking up to my left. For those moments, I'm glancing at my transcription of the song to make sure I nail all the little details that I maybe haven't 100% memorized. I use a transcription to initially learn a song, but sometimes, maybe one or two sections take longer to memorize. I can play them just fine when reading alongside playing, so for the sake of filming this video, I decided to use my sheet music for a couple parts.
