Constructing a Tipi Fire Pit with Air Intakes: Part 1

We build a tipi (aka teepee) fire pit using retaining wall block and a steel "reduced smoke" fireplace insert and run three underground pipes from vent stacks outside the tipi to bring air into the fire pit beneath the firepit insert. The total time it took us (2.5 people) was eight hours, but we were hampered by the fact that the top 6 inches of the ground was frozen solid, having done this in mid-November at about 9,000 ft elevation in the Rockies. We spent roughly 3.5 hours digging and then another 4.5 doing the construction and installation. If you have more pliable dirt, you'll be able to cut a couple hours off the digging time. We are not promoting any of the products seen in the video. The most expensive part of the installation is the firepit insert, which runs close to $700. The pipe and fitting was approximately $200. The 72 concrete blocks were about $100. Call it another $100 for all the misc stuff like bags of sand and rock and construction adhesive. Total of about $1100.
