The first-gen RX labeled as the RX300 sticks around for the 1999 through 2003 model years, powered in the U.S. by a revvy 3.0-liter, naturally aspirated V-6 cranking out 220 horsepower and a strong 222 lb-ft of torque through a four-speed automatic and a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. These early RXs are distinguished by their red-lens taillights—later models gain clear lenses with individual, round, red-colored lenses for each taillight element. All RXs save for a few special-edition models wear two-tone paint with complementary lower-body colors. A mid-cycle refresh lands in 2000 (for model year 2001), incorporating updated colors, headlights, and interior options. Note the exposed taillight innards on the model above. Inside not much changes throughout the first-generation RX300's life. A wood-trimmed steering wheel is part of the 2000 refresh, and an early built-in navigation system is available. Every other RX gets a white-on-blue LCD display that offers a crowded view of the audio and climate-control settings. In 2001, a limited edition "Silversport" was offered that included a monochromatic paint scheme in Millennium Silver or Black with an all black interior and perforated leather seats. Exclusively for 2002, Lexus introduced the limited RX 300 "Coach Edition," featuring perforated leather trim in the interior, honeycomb grille, Coach badging on the exterior and interior and a set of Coach luggage.
