How-to Stay Cool In Hot Weather Tutorial

Learn some strategies of how to stay cool in hot weather. One good strategy is to use cool water. Everybody knows that cool water has a cooling effect on a hot summer day. People drink cold drinks and go swimming or wading to cool off. However, not everybody has a pool or a cool stream available. These water cool down strategies require only a water tap and a freezer. Use Cool Water To Cool Off Here’s the basic strategy. Your body has a cardiovascular system, which means the heart is pumping and blood through the whole body. There are some spots on your body where there lots of blood vessels are lose to the surface. If you expose these parts of your body to cold water, the blood will cool down quickly and lose heat. The heat from your body gets transferred to the water, and the cooler blood flows through your whole body, cooling your whole body quickly. Additionally, when water evaporates from the surface of the body, it produces a cooling effect. This is called evaporative cooling. Similarly, when you sweat, your sweat evaporates and cools you down. When you get out of a pool and dry off, you feel cooler as you dry. When you wet a t-shirt and let it dry, it’s the same cooling principle. There are some parts of the body which have lots of blood vessels near the skin, making them ideal for cooling off. Examples include the head and face (wet your hair and let it dry), your face, your neck, your hands and wrists and your feet. The basic idea is to expose these areas of the body to cold water. It doesn’t take much water too cool you down. If the water isn’t cold enough, use the freezer to make a big chunk of ice, and use the ice to cool down the water, and then the water cools down the circulating blood which in turn cools you down. This is a good strategy for someone who doesn’t have an air conditioner, because you are just using your tap and your freezer to cool off. Drink Lots Of Water It is important to drink lots of water when it is hot, because you lose water when you sweat. Stay hydrated and keep on drinking water. You can also eat some salty food, because salt gets used by your body when you sweat. Cover Up—The Sun Is Not Your Friend If you work in the beating hot sun for many hours per day, you might want to consider this strategy. People who live in really hot sun-baked countries tend to dress a certain way. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause sunburn and heat stroke. The sun is not your friend. The basic strategy is to cover up from the sun. What they tend to do is use clothing as sunscreen and as a sun shelter. Remember, it’s cooler in the shade. The clothes tend to be made of thin material, usually cotton which absorbs sweat really well. Linen also works well. The clothes also tend to be loose fitting, and they cover most of the body. There’s lots of air circulation underneath the clothing, because it is loose fitting. The head also gets covered. A sombrero is a wide brimmed Mexican straw hat which provides lots of shade. Other countries have similar wide brimmed hats, which protect the face and neck from the sun by providing shade. In the middle east the men sometimes wear a head scarf and sunglasses which protect the head, neck and face from the sun. Sandals also work well in hot weather, because lots of air gets at your feet, the feet stay ventilated and your feet don’t sweat as much. A high velocity fan also works really well, because the wind from the fan helps sweat evaporate quicker through evaporative cooling. You can always set the fan to low, if there is too much wind. Remember to drink lots of water. Water and electricity don’t mix. Don’t touch the fan or get near electrical power cords if you are wet, due to the risk of electrical shock. Use lots of common sense. Have a Great Day and Stay Cool!
