The Keith & Dufftown Railway (A Wee Dram on the Whisky Line) 13th September 2024

Welcome to this video: A Wee Dram on the Whiskey Line - The Keith and Dufftown Heritage Railway. Filmed on Friday 13th September 2024. Running Time 9 minutes & 38 seconds. The Keith and Dufftown Railway (The Whiskey Line) is the UK’s most northerly Heritage Railway. The line originally opened back in 1862 and became part of the Great North of Scotland Railway. It carried both freight (mainly associated with local distilleries) and passengers enabling journeys through to Elgin and westwards up the Spey valley to Aviemore. It became part of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. Passenger services ceased along the line in 1968 as a result of falling numbers while freight services continued until the early 1980’s. The line continued to be used by occasional excursions such as the Northern Belle until 1991. British Rail had intended to close the line to all traffic at this point and lift the track. The Keith and Dufftown Railway Association was formed to safeguard the future of the line and by 2001 passenger services returned over the full route. This is a truly delightful heritage railway run entirely by volunteers (except for catering services which have been franchised). The line runs for 11 miles between Dufftown, which is the world’s malt whisky capital , and the historic market town of Keith. The aim of the railway is to extend the line for a further half a mile to connect with the main Inverness to Aberdeen line at Keith Junction. Discussions are ongoing at this time with Network Rail. Throughout the season the railway hosts a number of events such as fish & chip specials, 1940’s weekends, whisky festivals, and Santa specials in the lead up to Christmas. Some of the services include an opportunity for passengers to upgrade to the ‘dram tram’ and be served a wee dram of whisky during the journey (or a soft drink if you prefer). My journey along the line was made even more special by being allowed to sit with the driver. Back in my school days it was nearly every schoolboys dream to be an engine driver and this is something to tick off my bucket list. All in all it was an unforgettable day on an unforgettable railway. I hope you enjoy watching the video.
