First time I saw one of these was about two years ago. I would typically get up early in the morning, put the water on to heat for coffee, and sit back in my futon downstairs to relax and wake up. I'd left the lights off so I wouldn't bother my girlfriend, and suddenly I saw something on the floor moving very quickly towards me. I instinctively put my feet up (I was barefooted) and grabbed a stick near me to turn on the light. What I saw was the same spider, only a different shade of brownish-black and much smaller. Definitely a tarantula though, only skinny. Then, several months later I was walking through the fruit orchard that surrounds my cottage and ran into a large hole in the ground, approximately two inches in diameter. The hole was lined with web material and when I grasped a long, thin stick and began nudging it, a tarantula much as the one I had seen on the floor emerged. I researched the spider online and found it to be called a, "Thailand Black Tarantula." The article mentioned some people who collect tarantula's as pets have acquired them, but found them to be very aggressive and prone to biting. It does mention the venom is painful, but hardly lethal unless one has a sensitivity to it. Creepy looking thing I think, but then I have never much cared for spiders anyway. The article did go on to say the spider's burrows in the ground sometimes go very, very deep and are often elaborate...makes me wonder how they know this...did they dig the things out? Gotta wonder.
