How to do self assessment of breast lumps? - Dr. Nanda Rajaneesh

Self assessment of the breast is a part of screening of the breast for breast cancer. So it involves self breast examination, examination by the clinician once a year atleast and mammography as and when required. So self breast examination has to be done once in a month in a particular day. You can select a particular day, 4 days before your periods, that is the best day and it is done in 2 positions, one in lying down position and one in standing position in front of the mirror. If you are getting your periods on the first of a month, then on the 25th of the previous month, you do this self breast examination. Go and stand in front of the mirror. Look at both the breasts, the position of both the breasts, the nipple position of both the breasts, any lumpiness, any bulge anywhere, any ulceration in both the breasts. Look for that and you do a palpation of the breast with the flat of the hand. So that is most important. Never do the examination with the fingers. It has to be rolling of the flat of the hand up and down, side to side, in different position over the whole breast you have to look for any lumps in the breast. In the similar way, in the lying down position also you completely palpate your breast with the flat of the hand looking for the lumps. Whenever you feel for the lump, do not feel very anxious because out of 10 lumps in the breast, only one could be cancerous. So complete evaluation is a must. So it is better to visit the doctor immediately if you feel a lump in the breast. So a lump in the breast may be a solid one, which may move very well in the breast which is called fibroadenoma or it could be a cystic lump or it could be a cancerous lump which could be stuck to the breast tissues. So if you feel a lump, it is always important that you immediately visit the doctor.
