2023-12-27 Central Missouri Quail Hunting - Covey Scattered Out Feeding and Singles In The Woods

The weather was perfect on this day, so I started work way early and took off to spend the last couple hours of the day hunting with Sonny and Cosmo. We stumbled on the covey scattered in the edge of a soybean field and way back into the pasture. I missed the first but hit the second. Several birds flew up and into the woods. We hunted around in the woods for a while before Sonny found the first single, around 70 yards deeper in than I was looking. I managed to miss that perfectly pointed bird. Shortly after Cosmo pointed, and before I could get there Sonny went on point next to him. About four birds got up from there. I found my way to missing those as well. Then Cosmo pointed another one, and I missed that, too. Missing a perfectly pointed single is one of the most painful experiences I have encountered in the outdoors. Missing a perfectly pointed single over my 11-year-old dog makes me want to punch myself in the face. Just motivates me to practice more and try harder. My grandpa was renowned for missing birds. I want to be a cycle breaker. It intrigues me that the dogs went all through the area where the birds were feeding without picking up on them, then later, after they flew, they could smell them a mile away. Goes to show that when it comes to how a dog scents I'll never get it all figured out. Dogs and Stuff Notes 2023-12-28 Sonny - Eleven year old rescue pointer from pointerrescue.org. Magician at going very far out and finding birds where I would never think to look. https://pointerrescue.org/ Cosmo - Four year old rescue English setter from Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue. He came from Corfu, Greece. Medium-range master of both coveys, singles, and dead birds. https://esrescue.org/ Katie - Seven year old pointer. I adopted her from a hunter in his eighties who couldn’t take care of her anymore and wanted her to go to someone who hunts. She had always lived in a kennel but quickly got used to sleeping in beds and the couch. Great at finding coveys with a shorter range than Sonny. Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon - Bought in December of 2023. So far I really like it, except the bead fell out when I was shooting clay pigeons just a few weeks after I got it. Beretta sent me a new one no questions asked. Before that arrived I found a replacement at a local gun shop so I would have something to hunt with that weekend. I’ve just left that one in so it’s what shows in the videos. The one from Beretta is slightly more narrow. I honestly just don’t want to risk trying to take out the bead that’s in there with loctite blue and it twisting off. https://www.beretta.com/en-us/product... OTTO NoizeBarrier earplugs - Bought in December of 2023. So far these things are amazing and worth the $400 price tag. I use them with Westone True-Fit foam tips, and the ones that fit me are the red ones. They sell a Fit Kit with all the sizes so you can figure out which one fits best. The foam tips that come with the OTTOs are a little too big to fit easily for me. The OTTOs block out all sound and electronically replace it. The sound quality is excellent, and I quickly forget that I have them in. One thing I am grateful for is in addition to gunfire, they also do a great job of reducing the volume of my whistles, which have always left my ears ringing at the end of the day. Now they just deafen the people I’m hunting with. Definitely use the lanyard. I had recoil from a poorly mounted gun knock the right one out, and I was glad I could find it at the end of a string. https://www.otto-comm.com/NoizeBarrie... Filson chaps - I got my double-front tall chaps off ebay, and they were still expensive. I love them, but I’m going to just get their field pants one of these days. I wear the crotch out of whatever pants I’m wearing, whether they are Duluths or Carhartts. https://www.filson.com/bottoms/overal... Hand loads - Currently using a recipe with WinAA hulls, Win209 primers, 1 3/8oz #7.5, 27.5gr Longshot, bushing #28, WAA12R wad, 10,600psi, 1298fps. They got a kick. GoPro 9 Black - Currently borrowing this from a buddy. The 4k 60fps video really is nice. These things overheat and shut down without telling you if it’s warm or if you aren’t moving, though, so be advised. GoPro seriously needs to make an option that you can turn on in your room and let it run and it won’t die. Garmin Alpha 100 - These GPS collars work extremely well, and I never leave home without them. There are newer models, but these work good for me. #quail #quailhunting #quailhuntingwithdogs #pointer #setter #englishpointer #englishsetter #pointingdogs #birdhunting #birdhunt #upland #uplandhunting #uplandhuntingdog
