Dr Tomitaro Makino passed away in 1957 and the Makino Botanical Garden was opened in 1958. He was born at the end of the Edo period. He was a man who devoted himself solely to botanical research during the turbulent years of the end of the Edo period, the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. When you think about it, you would realize once again how difficult it must have been to live a life dedicated solely to botany, throughly from the dawn of botany to the harsh times during the war and post war. In the story "Ranman", the Murasaki Katabami bloomed beside the Makino family's house, which was horribly destroyed and burnt in the Great Kanto Earthquake. No matter what the environment, as long as it lives, it will leaf out, bask in the sunlight, flower and simply live out its life. This must have been Dr Makino's way of life. It was indeed a life lived as a "flower spirit", as he himself said. 「ラッキーの絵日記」より 「My游バス」で五台山行き（一日乗車券６００円。路面電車も乗れるよ）に乗って牧野植物園に行ってきたよ。 楽しみに見ている朝ドラ「らんまん」の牧野富太郎博士を記念して１９５８年に開園した植物園で、五台山の起伏を生かした８ヘクタールの広大な園内に3000種類以上の植物が育成されていた。 特に素敵だったのは、睡蓮のある庭と温室。 温室はまるで熱帯雨林を歩いているような壮大さだった。 ちょうど「らんまん」に登場した植物や花々が紹介されていて、「らんまん」の世界を歩いているようだったワン I took the 'My Yu Bus' to the Makino Botanical Gardens (one-day ticket 600 yen; can also take a tram with the ticket).
