Gunung Padang is a megalithic site in Karyamukti, Campaka, Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia, 30 km southwest of Cianjur and 8 km from Lampegan Railway Station. It has been called the largest megalithic site in all of Southeast Asia. According to controversial C14 dating, the construction could be dated 20,000 BC. are started. Geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja of the Research Center for Geotechnology at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences conducted research and suggested that the giant pyramid was built around 11,000 BC. was built by inhabitants of Atlantis. However, archaeologist Harry Truman Simanjuntak, in a 2014 report, assumes that the site is of more recent origin, perhaps between the 2nd and 6th centuries AD. The three famous Egyptian piramides are build between 2551 and 2472 BC. Cimanggu, Ciwangun and Cipanggulakan are the villages closest to the site. History The existence of the site was mentioned in Reports of the Antiquities Service (ROD, 1914). Dutch historian N. J. Krom named the site in 1949. The site is located 885 m above sea level and occupies a hillside by a series of terraces, bounded by receding stone walls, accessed via 400 andesite steps, 95 m up. The site is covered with massive, rectangular stones of volcanic origin. The Sundanese consider the site sacred and believe it is the result of King Siliwangi's attempt to build a palace in one night. The asymmetrical step pyramid faces northwest, toward Mount Gede. 2012 survey A 2012 study found that: the site dated to 6,500 years ago, according to a C14 date 3-4 m below the surface; from 12,500 years ago at a depth of 8-10 m. The artefacts on the ground date from 4,800 years ago. based on geoelectrical, georadar and geomagnetic tests, at least at a depth of 15 m there is a structure with large chambers. the south side has five stone terraces; the east side 100 stone terraces (2 m high, 2 m wide); the west side has stone terraces, which are still covered with earth and shrubs; the north side has a 1.5 m wide staircase and terraces. the site covers an area of approximately 25 hectares (for comparison, Borobudur occupies 1.5 hectares). the construction of the wall side of the terraces shows similarities with that of Machu Picchu in Peru. 2014 survey In late June 2014, the Ministry of Education and Culture declared Gunung Padang megalithic site a National Site Area, an area covering 29 hectares. On October 1, 2014, excavations were suspended because: a large structure is beneath the surface many artifacts have been discovered the 2014 excavation would not have been carried out properly The construction of the site has four periods: the site dated to 6,500 years ago, according to a C14 date 3-4 m below the surface; from 12,500 years ago at a depth of 8-10 m. Approx. 10,000 years ago (possibly from 20,000 BC) changes to the hill began. Approx. 9,000 years ago the hill was wrapped in andesite columns. Approx. 7,000 years ago the site was renovated and parallel layers of stone columns were added. Approx. 3,000 years ago, a new group covered the structure with a layer of soil. source Wikipedia
