2007-2013 Silverado / Sierra Buyer's Guide (GMT900 Common Problems, Engines, Specs)

Learn about common problems on the 2007-2013 Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra. This is a complete buyer's guide on the GMT900 trucks, introduced for the 2007 model year. These trucks were equipped with a new frame, wider track, Gen IV small block LS based engines with AFM, and brand new exterior and interior designs. There were two dashboards offered, the pure truck version and the luxury inspired dashboard found on the Silverado LTZ, Sierra SLT and Sierra Denali. These Trucks represented a milestone for GM, as they were made to exacting standards that saw exterior and interior panel gaps greatly shrink. Additionally, GM offered buyers many different configurations, from a fully loaded luxury truck to basic "Work Truck" package pickup. There were three beds available - short at 5' 8", standard at 6' 6" and long at 8'. There were three cabin configurations - regular cab, extended cab with 4 doors and rear 170 degree opening doors, and a crew cab with four full-size forward opening doors. The entry level engine was the 4.3L Vortec 4300 series V6 engine. The Gen IV small blocks included the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L engines. Note that most 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L engines had AFM. AFM was GM's active fuel management system, that would shut down 4 cylinders when the engine was under light load. This system caused oil consumption issues, tapping noises and sometimes even full engine failure. The were no manual transmissions offered on the 1500 Series trucks, with a 4 speed 4L60-E available in 2007-2008. Starting in 2009 it was replaced by the 6L80 automatic 6 speed transmission. There were 2WD and 4WD variants offered. Watch the video to find out what our verdict on these trucks are!
