In this Video Lecture, Professor Fink describes synaptic transmission at the Neuromuscular Junction in detail, including numerous pharmacological & pathological applications. Reference is made to voltage-gated Ca+2 Channels at the Synapse, Nicotinic ACh Receptor Sites on the Skeletal Muscle Cell Membrane, ligand-gated Na+ Channels, the role of Acetylcholinesterase (AChase) in permitting relaxation of the muscle, and active re-uptake of choline. In addition, Neuromuscular Blocking Agents causing flaccid paralysis and Acetylchoinesterase Inhibitors causing spastic paralysis are explained. Also described are how poliomyelitis, botulinum toxin (Botox), and myasthenia gravis all cause flaccid paralysis through different mechanisms.
