Erdogan said Turkey had retaliated against Syrian forces for killing 34 of its soldiers this week in the northwestern province of Idlib. The escalating tensions between Turkey and Russia, who back opposing forces in the Syria conflict, after an airstrike killed the Turkish troops sparked fears of a broader war and a new migration crisis for Europe. Around 13,000 migrants have gathered along the Turkish-Greek border, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said as several thousand migrants were in skirmishes with Greek police firing tear gas across the frontier. Syrian state media (SANA) said Sunday that Turkish forces targeted two Syrian planes over the Idlib region. SANA reported that the pilots are safe. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said the two jets went down over regime-held territory, likely after being targeted by Turkish F-16 planes.
