Finding EMPIRICAL FORMULA & MOLECULAR FORMULA | Chemistry with Cat

Finding EMPIRICAL FORMULA & MOLECULAR FORMULA | Chemistry with Cat Empirical Formula is the most popular EXAM question ever! Empirical Formula and Molecular Formula can be found from mass percent composition! They have the same RATIO, but empirical formula is the simplest form of that ratio, and molecular formula is the the actual formula for a specific molecule! To find empirical formula: First, assume 100g in the sample and find the moles of each atom. Then divide by the lowest amount of moles to set them in a ratio. Then, to get whole numbers, DO NOT ROUND, multiply all numbers by 2, or 3, or 4, until you get whole numbers! To get molecular formula: find the molar mass of the empirical formula and see if it matches the molar mass of the molecule. If it matches, then it is the molecular formula! If not, you multiply the empirical formula until you get the right molar mass!
