Thriving Local Businesses Provide Jobs to Thousands in Afghanistan

The Balkh Dairy Union factory is one of 145 local enterprises that have received support from the Afghanistan New Market Development Project. The factory has expanded to new markets in Balkh province, increased production of dairy, and resolved packaging issues. This World Bank-supported project helps local small and medium enterprises standardize their products, improve their revenues, and generate jobs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: Fresh milk arrives daily at the Balkh Dairy Union factory. The dairy factory pasteurizes 5,000 liters of fresh milk daily and produces yoghurt, cream, butter, buttermilk, and other dairy products, supplying markets in Mazar-e-Sharif city in Balkh Province. The factory was able to scale up production and resolve packaging issues after receiving support from the Afghanistan New Market Development Project (ANMDP) in 2014. Balkh Dairy union factory is one of 145 business organizations in Balkh Province receiving project support in areas such as technical training, and marketing and sales. With ANMDP’s help, these organizations have been able to standardize their products and increase their capacity and resources. ANMDP has helped hundreds of small and medium businesses in four major urban cities in Afghanistan. It has helped raise revenues and generated employment for thousands of Afghans. The project is supported by the World Bank.
